 Interview

First off, can you talk about how you got your start in production?
I got into it by just listening to my mom's old records when i was 12 years old. Just listening to all different types of records trying to see how the kick and snare hit in the song and how the bass would be played. Just trying to see how i could make music without having any shit to make it with and when i turned 13 years old my mom got me two belt drive turntables and i started dj'ing and collecting records.

What equipment did you use at first?
The shit i had was two belt drive turntables and a gemini mixer and two fisher tape decks...and then i moved on to a two-second sampler and a 4-track recorder, and then an sp1200 with no disk drive, and then a real sp1200 with a disk drive and an akai s950.

How about now?
Now i use an mpc3000!

Let's talk about your production techniques, when you sit down to start a beat, what's the first thing you do?
I might just be checking out a record & hear something i like or i could be working on some drums & go from there...or i could just be sitting behind the keyboard playing something & go from there.

How do you know when a beat is finished?
To me every beat is different some you might get done quicker than other's... Some of the beats don't get finished sometimes until vocals are recorded on it & you hear different shit you could add to it.

You've done work with g-unit, how was that experience?
It wuz good even though i wuz not in the studio doing the recording process of the song...they are on the road a lot so they record in a lot of diffrent places so i just sent in the pro tools files & heard it just b4 it got mixed.

How about skillz, i know you've worked with him, what's that like?
Well me & Skillz are fam. I also dj for him & we have been down for like 10 years now... So we work good together cuz we know each other...we knock shit out quick!

How do you feel about the Shaq diss?
Well my view is that Shaq needs to play his spot on the court & stay there! He is not fucking with skillz on the mic. Just like skillz is not fucking with him on the court. So he asked for it so now he is going to get it! You know how skillz do it!

What mc's do you love working with?
Skillz, my man joell ortiz (coming soon),little brother,g-unit, redman, el da sensi, kardinal offishall, pharoahe monch

What's coming up for you?
Working on stuff for skillz
working on a song with skillz & little brother(overkast records)
working on el da sensi, pharoahe monch
big tone (slum village) & my album coldfusion (fup/abb records)
