DEUCE V INTERVIEW BY BRIAN KAYSER

First off, can you give Heads some background as to how Deuce V formed?
Romey: Well, Deuce V started in 98-99 around the same time we started our own record company Get Rich Records. Shaun was my ace before we became a group so it was basically we both rap we both nice let’s do it together. And Deuce V is just a creative way of saying Vice Versa because I’m tall he short he light skinned I’m dark etc. Oh and we were a group way before we came up with a good enough name to call ourselves I rather not reveal the throwback names.

You grew up on the Southside of Chicago, can you talk about what that was like?
Romey: Yeah, I’m from the Southside, Wild Hundredz, Roseland, 8-ball. But for real growing up in Chicago was the best and worst thing that ever happened to me. The best part was you got to see what life was really about at an early age the family coming together for holiday’s and birthday’s then the struggles with rent you know the little things that make you appreciate family and an understanding early on life is a struggle so be ready to go hard. And I also seen and heard a lot of things from old heads around me growing up so I think that made me a bit more advanced than most kids so from that I guess I developed a hustler/business minded approach on life early. I was an entrepreneur at 12 or 13 yrs old. Now the worst part would definitely be the shootings. Just Growing up in Chicago you have to be ready to endure some type of pain cause you constantly put in a situation where you lose close family and friends to the everyday violence. It’s also too many people in my neighborhood with a I don’t give no fuck mentality like if I live fuck it if I die fuck it in the meantime I’m gone smoke and drink my life away. But this where I’m from the good the bad the ugly.

You dropped out of Community College and were hustling, do you feel like you made the right decision looking back on it?

Romey: I definitely think I made the right decision as far as leaving school it was beginning to conflict with my street activities. And my heart just wasn’t into it so I left it alone to pursue my true love which was the music. So when I look back that’s one thing I don’t regret. Kanye’s a College Dropout from Chicago and look where it got him.

Shaun Gunn:
I left school cause I wasn’t feeling the whole idea of being broke around a bunch of wealthy mufuckas…I had to get my stunt on. I’m up there in the middle of Ohio broke as hell and my niggas back home riding clean. I got three pair of pants for the whole semester when I’m used to shopping after copping. Anyhow, I did what I did and I’m where I’m at for a reason. This is what I’m here for, I’m not here to be on a D1 ball team, I’m here to speak for my people.

When did you link up with each other?
Romey: Me and Gunn linked up in High School. I liked his style he’s was that funny, sly, fly muthafucker and so was I so we just clicked. He stayed next door to my auntie so she brought him over to the house and it’s been a wrap ever since so from there the Rap Lebron and Carmello was formed.

Shaun Gunn:
Romey transferred to my high school and I was the first nigga he fucked with when he touched down. We was big into the clothes, kicks and hoes. Running through school talking bout niggas and bagging hoes. I was putting out tapes in high school but I was on that canibus shit, Romey came on that Bone shit. We was wack as hell now that I think about it!!! He was like man you gotta dumb that shit down so niggas can understand it and I was like you gotta slow that shit down so niggas can hear it, and from there its been a wrap.

Word is that you're working with a lot of big names right now, can you let us know who it is?
Shaun Gunn:
We working with a lot big names on the strength of work ethic and talent. I think artist respect creativity. We at a point in the game where we need something new. So niggas like Rsonist of the heatmakers recognized that and were real enough to lend a hand. We hooked up with my nigga Kid called Roots out in Manhattan through my man Shakim. We rode round with him and shot the breeze and real recognized real. He threw us some joints and we been tight ever since. Then we been getting love from home town hero’s. We met the nigga No ID, he came to see us at the house of blues in chicago and he showed love. We got Boog, who’ve we’ve known since back in the day, he got his hands dirty with the project.
We also did a mixtape with Sickamore. DJ Radio, The Streetsweepers, Best Kept Secrect been throwing us love on his tapes too. We also got production coming from Clark Kent and Megahertz. So shit is crazy!!!

DJ Sickamore hosted your last mixtape, can you talk about that project?
Shaun Gunn:
Sickamore was the first NY Mixtape DJ to extend his arm. Its was wild for us. We was just young niggas spitting darts when we met him. He fell in love with the music we played him. He just kept saying “Shitttttt”. And anybody know Sickamore know that’s his signature sound, so we was in. We gave em original songs and freestyles. That mixtape is crazy, Jim Jones is on there bigging us up, Elliot Wilson from XXL, Bink, Rsonist of the Heatmakers, etc.
If niggas ain’t got that yet, they internet download time must not be up to par!!!!

Romey: Sickamore that’s my man he cool as a fan real laid back. We flew out to NY my man Shakim introduced us to Sick he seen the talent and hunger and was like hey I wanna be one of the first cats to co-sign that Deuce V them next niggas. He ain’t never fucked with no Unsigned niggas he fucked with Snoop, Jay-Z, Just Blaze so I thought it was real big of him to get down with Chi-town’s premiere group

Chicago's been getting a lot more love lately, can you tell ys what the Hip Hop scene is like out there?
Shaun Gunn:
Chicago been hot for a long time. We been doing our thing we just not getting recognition. Niggas like Kanye been responsible for hit records for years he just didn’t get the credit. Twista been doing his thang for years!!! Do or Die brought all the pimp shit to the game that niggas been exploiting as of late. Its just that know we starting to big up our own artist. Radio been a lot more willing to help break us now. We one of the biggest cities in the US. Pimping originated here, so we been fly for years. Gang banging came from the streets of Chicago! So we definitely got stories to tell. I think its just our turn now.

Romey: The Chi been on a fire a minute it just took Twista and Kanye to kick the door down for the new generation of chicago spitters to get a shot . Check the track record 98% of the music that came from our city went gold or platinum the midwest period to be real with you. You got Bumpy Johnson and Sly Polaroid and Goon Squad doing they thing. L.E.P and Moonie with Infared White Boy, and of course Deuce V bout to put Chicago rap where it need to be. Chicago the next hip-hop hot bed and label know it.

What's the next move for Deuce V?
Shaun Gunn:
We got the streets of Chicago, hell the midwest as a whole. We got the mixtape dj’s showing love, we got our single “Oompa” on radio stations charting BDS, and that shit is growing like crazy!!! We got a best of mixtape dropping with Heavy Hitter DJ Pharris, so we just going hard. The next move is the best move…get this major distribution deal. and make Get Rich Records and Deuce V a household name. And man, you hearing it from me, the labels been doing a lot of courting so niggas betta put they bid in now! Before another Midwest phenomenon leaves there desk only to land number one on the charts.

How can Heads get in touch with you?
Romey: Fans can check out the website and Industry execs already know how to get in touch with us. Get at the lawyer Shakim or Big Al.

Shaun Gunn:
How can niggas get in touch with us? www.getrichrecords.com, email us at duecev@getrichrecords.com, call (608) 288-9222 and prey somebody answer. And if you really real, come to the hood and ask for us!!!

Shout Outs:
Romey: I wanna shout out the whole Get Rich Administration: First I wanna shout out our in house producers Unit-7 and Beat Nick the next producers from the midwest to pop. Shakim I’m focused my man Big Al let’s go B-EZ, Boo Baby, Dario, Dv and Scott Bernstein. Kanye and Twista for being pioneers. Infared, Boog, Bump J and Goon Squad and my man Ramadan @ tony sports.
