First off,
introduce yourself to everyone out here that doesn't know you yet.
Yess Sirr this
yo boy Dow Jones, Cali Untouchable DJ’s (West Coast Mixtape Kings). Mixtape/Mix
show DJ, Producer, Street Promotions all that homie. West Coast representative
YAA KNOW!!!
You're
part of the Cali Untouchables, how did that come about?
Man, I mean it's
just real cats reaching out to a hustla ya know (DJ Warrior, DJ Fingaz, TheDJStrong
and DJ Hideo). I’ve just been getting these mixtapes off and after I dropped
my West Coast Offense Vol. 1 hosted by Balance (Bay Area Mixtape King, XXL’s
#3 Next To Blow) at the lil Urban Networks Summit, DJ Warrior reached out to
me out of the blue and we was just choppin things up back and forth for the
next week or so, and everything just clicked. We were both seeing eye to eye
on a lot of things, like the state of the game out west and what needs to be
done to get all these HOT artists we got out into every hood, every home, just
everywhere ya know. Real recognize real, and that was pretty much it and now
we running the streets out west, and got a real strong core structure, it's
going to be real crazy out here, in a real way!!!!!!!!!
How do
you get your mixtapes out there?
We got a real strong
street team out west. I mean we putting together a real goon squad of cats to
hold us down on the hand to hand kombat ya know, and then we on damn near every
major mixtape website, especially MixUnit.com. Big shout to the Rios bros...
They really holding us down big on there. And aside from that we in all the
mom and pops and little sides spots up and down the West Coast and we steadily
moving into stores across the country… and of course the bootleggers is
moving them joints yaa know!!!! I mean you just gotta really be persistent on
your hustle, cause there are so many garbage ass fake dj’s flooding they
bullshit azz easy cd creator tapes in the streets, u gotta brand you shit so
it stands out from the rest and let the consumers know that when they snatching
a Dow Jones or Cali Untouchables tape its official, and the shit gonna bang.
Just like on all my tapes u gonna here “Play Your Position” drops
all over them joints. I’m letting cats know can’t everybody be the
coach, some cats gotta play the field or be a ball boy, you gotta out hustle
the competition. Your work ethic is everything in life. No matter what it is
your doing, if u putting in the time and staying true to your craft your gonna
succeed. You just gotta have that will to win and not lay down for naathun,
and don’t ever wait for anybody to do shit for you, do everything your
self as much as you can, get your fukkin game up, get your mixtapes up, get
your bars up!! You can also get my mixtapes first at my official website www.2ndchanceproductions.com
yaa know!!
A lot of
people are sleepin on Krondon, he hosted your last mixtape, why'd you choose
him?
Man Dizzle (Krondon)
is my fukkin dude along wit the whole Strong Arm Steady Gang (Xzibit, Krondon,
Phil Da Agony, Mitchy Slick, Planet Asia, Chace Infinite, Self Scientific, DJ
Kahlil). I mean im really trying to hold the West down and get the real cats
shit out worldwide. There are so many artists out West that have BEEN dope that
cats never get to hear about cause radio is bullshit cause of all these faggot
ass PD’s and music directors who just wanna do that pay to play shit and
is scared to play real music. But that’s why u gotta love the mixtape
game and XM and Sirius Radio, it provides an outlet for that real shit that
people need and have been asking for… I mean why do u think mixtapes are
so successful, PEOPLE WANT THAT NEW SHIT, THAT STREET SHIT, THAT REAL RAW UNCUT
SHIT!!!! We as mixtape dj’s is filling the void of regular radio right
now, and cats like Krondon and the whole Steady Gang have history they been
putting in work, they been grinding. Please believe any cat that you see on
my tapes or hostin my joints or any other Cali Untouchable’s mixtapes
are the truth, real mc’s, real hustla’s just cats that do what they
say and say what they do, real spit yaa know. I mean its just a vibe, when u
fukin wit real cats its easy to work and put out good shit. That’s what
i'm trying to bring to the mixtape game is quality game, quality intros, mixes
all that shit. A lot of east coast cats don’t even think there are a lot
of west coast dj’s or cats that really put in work homie, but that’s
what we finna change. All the shit that the Cali Untouchables is dropping is
like instant classics and collectables on the streets. I mean it’s the
first time EVER that a dj gang like the Cali Untouchables is getting behind
ALL the west coast artists and really pushin they songs out to the public in
a major way worldwide. This shit aint never really been done before out west,
and its an honor to be part of this movement man, we takin over radio, streets,
clubs, all that shit homie. And the main thing is we holding down ALL the west
coast artists, it aint a certain klick or crew we fukkin wit, its all the west
coast homies that is putting out good music. Everything has always been so split
up cause of crews or gang shit out west, we trying to just bring everyone together
and if we all doing our thing its just gonna help the coast as whole that much
more. Its like from Seattle to Dago (San Diego) it’s a wrap, Cali Untouchables
got it covered. We here now and this shit aint never gonna go away. We either
gonna slide it to you or smack you in the grill wit it, but either way u gonna
get, and the best part is you gonna love it!!!!
How do
you go about making a mixtape? What makes the cut and what doesn't?
I mean it's simple
all my tapes is mixed so they gotta flow. So I just put all the joints that
go to go in a stack and let shit ride. As far as what type or who gets on the
tapes, it's basically streets is talking. I'll just got at the cats that’s
making noise or who I think is hot and put the shit out, and so far the streets
been riding wit me, so I'm pretty confident in my ear to tell me what shit people
wanna hear. I also like to feature them cats that is just below the radar but
been dope that the regular cats never hear on a day to day. I mean basically
any real mixtape dj that is moving units is essentially a ghetto A&R in
a way. We keep an ear tucked to the streets and get in contact wit the cats
making noise and make em famous!!!! I mean the music speaks for it self and
if the music doesn’t speak for it self than it aint the right artist,
feel me? All music aint good music, and that’s thing some cats need to
really listen to they shit before they try and push it to mixtape djs cause
half the time its bullshit and cats need to be honest wit they self and screen
there own shit. I mean just cause u got a sound click page don’t mean
u an artist. The whole internet shit is kinda crazy there is so much bullshit
out there and it's so easy to make music now that half these cats are doing
it cause they think it's cool or they will get girls and money and that’s
why them cats usually fall on they face, or end up on VH1 instead of the basement
yaa know.
Have you
made a perfect mixtape yet?
Any real person
knows that u can never be perfect, you can always improve, that’s been
my main formula for success, “always make your next better than your last”.
Make a hotter intro, drop hotter blends, hustle more to get the hottest track
first or artists hosting your shit. If you in this entertainment business u
need to work everyday all day, be out and get you and your shit visible. Never
not have something floating around or cats not mentioning your name or a project
u got popping off, there is always something to do, ALWAYS… sleep when
you’re dead!!
Let's talk
about your production as well, what's good with that?
It's going homie,
things is just starting to bubble, but it's definitely coming together in a
real way. I mean I been busy on the low but you gonna start to see a lot more
of my shits really soon. I’m going to start featuring more tracks on mixtapes
and on some projects coming up, but for right now we gonna keep it on the low.
I just wanna get this Dow Jones & Cali Untouchables name out there real
tuff right now and build relationships along the way, then just change gears
and hit em wit the heat naw mean.
What equipment
do you use?
I mean I got the
usually suspects the MPC 4000, a bunch of records, a Fantom keyboard, a Moog
and some modules.
How would
you describe your beats?
You can’t
lol. I mean u don’t really want to be squared into one peg ya know. I
kinda just let the sounds lead me where I need to be ya know, its just a feel
or a mood u in and u just run wit it. Sometimes you just play around wit shit
and try and think outside the box and u might come up on something or a different
way of doing this, and especially since im fresh in the game, im just trying
a lot of different shit. But I guess im not really into the really poppy keyboard
shit, like to keep it a lil dirty and raw but still have that bounce but have
a nice little edge to it.
Who have
you worked with so far?
You basically gonna
see a lot of shit first on my mixtapes and other Cali Untouchable tapes. But
I’m fukkin wit Balance, the whole Strong Arm Steady Gang, Sly Boogy, Scipio…
just wait and see. It’s only the beginning and your boy gotta earn stars
and bars, but shit is definitely on the rise pimp.
Who do
you want to work with?
Shit, im already
working with a lot of the west cats that I have wanted to work with; it’s
been a real blessing homie. But im really waiting for Ras Kass to come home,
I wish I could have worked with Mausberg (R.I.P), im really feeling Stat Quo’s
shit right now, Scarface would be dope, Twista, M.O.P, UGK, of course Jay Z
(shout out Jamal Crawford sporting them S.Dots for the Knicks), Beanie Sigel,
Ludacris, Trick Daddy… I mean I down to work wit anybody homie its all
love.
What
are your all-time favorite albums?
Shit all the NWA
albums, all the DJ Quik albums, Dr. Dre’s-The Chronic, all the Liks shit,
Outkast-Southernplayalistic, the whole Jay Z catalog, Beanie Sigel-The Truth,

& MJG albums, all the Geto Boys shits, all Scarface’s shits, all the
Gangstarr joints, the Colors Soundtrack, all the Too Short records, all them
E40 joints, them M.O.P albums, all that. I mean im fukin wit everything old
soul joints Al Green’s, Curtis Mayfields, Bobby Blueband, Rose Royce all
them shits. I mean there is so much good old shit out there, you just gotta
go and find it and dig for shit or checkout different types of music. I mean
young cats yall shouldn’t just limit yourself to the shit that everybody
else says is cool listen to everything be a real renaissance type dude, it will
give u a better understanding and appreciation for shit. And music is really
all the same any way look at cats like M.O.P they fukkin wit rock shit and they
some real street cats, don’t peg your self in a whole life is short try
and fuk wit as much shit as you can, u never know what might be tight or give
u an idea to flip.
What MC's
got next in your opinion?
Man there are a
lot of cats out there that are ready to fight for the crown, especially out
west. We got my dogg Balance and Frontline (Locksmith & Left) out the Bay
Area, of course the Strong Arm Steady Gang (Xzibit, Krondon, Phil Da Agony,
Mitchy Slick, Planet Asia, Chace Infinite, Self Scientific, DJ Kahlil) The world

album in late November, im telling you know this shit is one of the best fukkin
albums I have heard in a long time, real spit!! And Game’s shit is a done
deal reppin that CPT to the fullest, Scipio been dope (he is also Game’s
