SIDE EFFECT INTERVIEW BY BRIAN KAYSER (03/30/2004)

It's been a minute since we checked in with you, what have you been up to lately?

I've just been constantly writing and recording trying to build up my catalog of material. Promoting the "Spitacular" 12", and the new cd "Rocking Chair Theory", and hopping on any and every show that comes my way tryna get my name and music out there.

You just dropped "Rocking Chair Theory," can you talk about how you went about making the album?

Well initially the cd I was going to put out on Krush Unit was going to be an EP, but we just kept recording, and it turned into an album. I met Stress about 2 years ago and told him I liked his beats. We became friends and started recording songs together. The album is a collection of songs we've been working on for the past year and a half. When we were finally in a position to officially put music out, "Rocking Chair Theory" was the outcome.

What's the story behind the "Rocking Chair Theory?"

It's basically a note to self saying...when I'm old and gray I don't want to regret that I didn't go after my dreams. It's about pursuing your goals and not listening to negative people who tell you that you can't do something. That's the idea behind the title.

"Get Retarded" is a dope story track, how did you go about making that and what do you want Heads to take away from that track?

Thanks, that's my favorite song on the album. I wanted to give props to my family who've always supported me in my music. The 1st verse is dedicated to my pop who used to be a DJ, the 2nd verse to my older brother, and the 3rd to my mother. It's a story about how each of them have influenced me directly or indirectly musically. When I first heard the track I didn't know where I was going to go with it. But after I wrote the verse about my dad, the rest of it kind of fell in to place. It's a very personal joint.

You've been in Hip Hop for a minute, what have been the most important lessons you've learned over the years?

D.I.Y Do it yourself. I try to be as self sufficient as possible. Don't rely on other people to always do things for you, because even though it's great to have help, no one looks out for your best interest better than you. It's funny because D.I.Y is the title of a song that's going to be on the next album I'm working on. I've also learned to try to make the most of my time. I've wasted alot of time bs'n, I feel as though I could have been alot further along. So I try to get something accomplished that's going to further my career everyday.

Stress handles your production, what's it like working with him and how do you guys go about making a track?

Stress is one of my best friends, he's a real good guy. He's a beat digger, he's got a huge vinyl collection and he's constantly making tracks. So whenever I come by he'll play me some of his latest beats, and if I'm feeling it, it's mine. We have fun when we record. We have our own studio so it's a very laid back vibe where we're not under any time constraints. He'll lay down the beat, and I come through and do my vocals. And since we have the studio now, we're able to experiment more with the vocals and mixing and all that good stuff.

Splitt of Forever Fam (DJ Meddafore) is the only feature on the album and you guys seem to have good chemistry together, what else is coming up for you guys?

Splitt, that's crew right there. He's a hard worker and a ill emcee. He's constantly recording too. He's killing the mixtape circuit with Meddafore. We were both feeling that beat alot and decided to collab on it, it definitely came out hot. Spliit and I will definitely be doing more joints together real soon. Look out for his album about to drop on Krush Unit in a hot minute. It's gonna be bananas!

You were on the Vans Warped Tour last year, how did that go and what was the experience like?

It was great! I only did 3 local dates, Philly, Jersey, & NYC but I enjoyed the experience. That tour is all about merchandising, so you really gotta be on point with your products as far as having t-shirts and cd's if you're really trying to get your name out there and make some money. We've been invited back to do some dates on the tour this summer so I look forward to that. I really like doing shows and seeing how people react to my music.

What's the last album you've had in the box?

Kanye West. I like his album alot. I find it refreshing. T.I Trap Muzik, Rasco, Jay-z, Dead Prez, G-Unit, Little Brother I still listen to. Westside Connection. I listen to everything from everywhere. I basically take my favorite songs off everybodies album and make my own mix cd's.

If you could battle anyone in the world, who would it be and why?

Wow, hahaa even though i know I'd get my ass handed to me I'd probably say KRS-One. He's the ultimate live performer to me, the way he commands a crowd and the stage presence he has is unmatched. I would just battle him for braggin rights to say I did, even though I know I'd get ate up hahaaaa!!

If you could change one thing in Hip Hop now, what would it be and why?

I would change the money & materialistic factor that plays so heavy nowadays. It's funny cause I was watching videos the other day and they played a current artist like 50 or somebody and the video was all glitzy and money & jewelry is flying everywhere. Then right after that an old Black Moon video came on from like '94 and it was so much more simplistic, but just as dope! The focus was more on the music & lyricism. I miss the simplicity.

What's your next move?

My next move is to keep hustling and help try to get Krush Unit some major distribution. That's my next goal. It can be done we just gotta keep putting out good quality music and working the angles. Music-wise I'm going to keep promoting this cd "Rocking Chair Theory" while at the same time recording my new album entitled "Dirt Hustlin". I'm also finishing up a collaboration album I have with Reef the Lost Cauze, and we're calling that "Cauze & Effect"! It's gonna be blazin so look out for that!

Shout Outs:

Word, I wanna first give a shout to DJ 730 for always supporting me and showing me love through your mixtapes and this site, I appreciate it! Shouts to my Krush Unit fam, Havok, Stress, Stif Lou, M.Ski, Splitt, J. Famous, Reef, Sesion 31, Ron G, DJ Primetime, my family and friends, and everybody who supports and shows love...Peace
